4 year old goes blind after the flu

4 year old goes blind after the flu”

"Influenza B activates their own immune systems, attacks their own organs, especially the brain, and causes brain swelling", said Dr. Aditya Badheka.

Phillips said she is just amazed at her daughter's progress. In fact, this year is slated to be one of the worst flu seasons in decades - so far 32 children have died from the virus.

The situation took a turn on December 24 when Jade's father, Stephen DeLucia, went to wake her up.

"It affected the part of her brain that perceives sight, and we don't know if she's going to get her vision back", Theresa Czech, a neurologist who treated DeLucia at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, told CNN. "They said our child might not ever wake up, and if she did, she might not ever be the same", Phillips told CNN. The family started a GoFundMe to help with their medical expenses.

Jade woke up nearly two weeks later.

But the little girl still has a long way to go in her recovery.

Now, Phillips is urging other parents to get their children vaccinated, which cannot only prevent them from getting the flu, but can also offer protection from extreme outcomes like Jade's if they do get sick. 7 days after feeling like Jade was walking away and there was no hope. Her family says that the unvaccinated girl's infection led to serious neurological complications that have left her blind, perhaps permanently.

Her parents are thankful their child is alive, and are using the ordeal to remind others how important it is to get their flu shot.

Jade could also have cognitive or developmental problems, such as learning disabilities, added Czech.

"I didn't think I was going to see her again at that point", mum Amanda Phillips said upon seeing her daughter airlifted to the hospital. In reality, an annual flu shot only provides some protection against the strains of flu encountered during the upcoming, current, or most recent winter season.

The 2019-2020 flu season - which is already growing as much as be one of many worst the US has seen in years - has been notably unsafe to children.

It's been one of the worst seasons for influenza in recent years but there's another potentially unsafe strain of the flu that is most severe in children.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this year's flu has hit children especially hard.

"We wish mother and father to know they need to get a flu shot each season..." Twenty-one of those who died had contracted influenza B, which is much more common in children and younger adults, according to the CDC.

It is true that the flu vaccine is only about 40 to 60 percent effective in preventing flu, according to the CDC. Additionally, a 2014 study showed that the vaccine reduced children's risk of flu-related pediatric intensive care unit admission by 74%. "It's not fun, but you get the vaccine not so much to prevent that as to prevent the chances of having a disgusting complication from the flu".
