Food airdropped for bushfire-affected animals in Aus”

In a weekend interview with the Australian Broadcasting Company, Morrison acknowledged climate change's impact on the bush fires, which have exacerbated the country's hot, dry summers that lead to the tinderbox conditions.

The carrots and sweet potatoes were provided by the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Services. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) estimates that 1.25 billion animals have died either directly or indirectly from the fires.

The mission, named "Operation Rock Wallaby", called for dropping 2,000 pounds of carrots and sweet potatoes across various colonies. That figure includes birds, reptiles and mammals, except bats.

Wildlife workers say they've dropped almost a tonne of food across bushland to help endangered wallabies affected by Australia's bushfire crisis.

As if fire and starvation was not enough of a threat to the endangered indigenous species, the government has also warned of the need to back up the supply of food with intensive feral predator control.

The tragic Australian wildfires that are now stirring smoke up to South America have resulted in a death toll of at least 27 in a crisis that has destroyed more than 2,000 homes.

He said assistance was necessary because the wallabies were already under stress from the ongoing drought, making survival challenging, HuffPost reported.

Food was dropped to colonies in the state's Capertee and Wolgan valleys; Yengo National Park; and in the Kangaroo Valley, government officials in New South Wales said. The plan is created to help maintain the animal colonies and allow them to recover.

Large parts of Australia were burned in the fire that started months before the official burning season started.

Because of the bushfires, the natural food for animals and wallabies has been burnt and then, the stranded were left with limited natural food.

Across Australia, Dickman projected, the number could be well over a billion.

He added: 'At this stage, we expect to continue providing supplementary food to rock-wallaby populations until sufficient natural food resources and water become available again in the landscape, during post-fire recovery'.

The prime minister, Scott Morrison, has acknowledged that climate change has had an influence on the fires and has defended his government's climate record.
