UEFA 'Rigged' Team Of The Year To Include Cristiano Ronaldo”

The UEFA website explains that the votes of more than 2 million fans were polled to whittle it down to the star XI, but with uncertainty over how the unusual formation was arrived at.

A second tweeted: "You've changed the formation to 4-2-4 just to fit Ronaldo in".

Five-time Ballon d'Or victor Ronaldo joined Barcelona's Messi, Liverpool's Mane and Bayern Munich's Lewandowski in the UEFA Team of the Year's frontline, while Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne paired with Barca's Frenkie de Jong in midfield. Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski completed the team.

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, De Ligt, Van dijk, Robertson; De Bruyne, De Jong; Messi, Cristiano, Lewandowski and Mané.

Lionel Messi (Barcelona): The 2018/19 Champions League Forward of the Season, 12-goal top scorer and first player to score in 15 successive seasons in the competition, Messi racked up a half-century of goals for the ninth time in the last ten years.

It is the Portuguese's inclusion however, that has left many scratching their head.

The player to miss out in this case, according to the aforementioned source was N'Golo Kanté, who was the third most voted CM.

UEFA's decision to squeeze Ronaldo in their XI sent social media into overdrive with fans questioning their integrity.

UEFA have revealed the official Team of the Year for 2019, with two-time African Player of the Year Mohamed Salah one of the notable omissions.

"As a result, there are five UEFA Champions League winners and four UEFA Nations League finalists".

"It changes regularly and this year is no exception".

A UEFA spokesperson reportedly defended the move by suggesting it was thanks to Portugal's win in the inaugural Nations League final, and to "reflect the votes of the fans in parallel with the players' achievements in UEFA competitions".
