Facebook Reportedly Abandons Plan To Include Ads In WhatsApp”

It was reported past year that Facebook was getting ready to introduce ads as part of the "Status" feature on WhatsApp, similar to how ads are shown in-between Instagram Stories, but it looks like that won't be happening. WhatsApp in recent months disbanded a team that had been established to find the best ways to integrate ads into the service, according to people familiar with the matter. The move was decided in order to generate revenue from the app, but it seems that the company has reportedly abandoned the plan altogether.

Facebook bought WhatsApp for $22 billion (roughly Rs. 1,56,276 crores) in 2014. A 99 cent annual subscription fee that WhatsApp used to collect was removed from the app after it was acquired by Facebook. However, WhatsApp's founders were strongly against the move and co-founder Brian Acton resigned from Facebook following disagreements over how Facebook should monetize WhatsApp. The major concern of Koum and Acton was that inclusion od ads in the app will hamper its end to end encryption policy. If Facebook does decide to place ads on WhatsApp, it will have to make sure that all users are alerted. The company also wants to connect businesses to potential customers through WhatsApp and generate revenue in the process. However, the sources claim that the company still plans to introduce advertisements in the WhatsApp Status feature at some point in the future, though it remains unclear when that may happen. In 2016, the social media giant began sharing some user data from WhatsApp to Facebook for better ad targeting. But The Wall Street Journal reports that Facebook is moving away from monetizing WhatsApp, at least for now.

In October 2018, WhatsApp vice president Chris Daniels said that adverts within the app's Status feature would be the "primary monetisation mode for the company".
