Microsoft Surface Duo SDK prepare Android devs for dual screens

Microsoft Surface Duo SDK prepare Android devs for dual screens”

The initial state for software will be for an app to open to just one screen, though programs will be able to span across both of them on dual-screen devices like Microsoft's upcoming Surface Neo.

Microsoft announced the availability of the preview SDK for the Surface Duo. This release is meant for developers but contained within it are the company's plans for how apps will run on dual-screen laptops. The Surface Duo which is the brands first dual-screen smartphone running on Android and the Surface Neo which is essentially a larger tablet version of the Duo with Windows 10X on board.

An Android Emulator with a preview Surface Duo image that is integrated into Android Studio so you can test your app without a physical device. "The emulator simulates postures, gestures, hinge angle, mimicking the seam between the two screens, and more", Gallo says. Microsoft has more documentation on how to create apps for dual-screen devices on this page. The Windows 10X preview SDK is expected to arrive on February 11.

This morning the company is pulling back the curtain a bit, debuting its first batch of dual-screen developer tools and shedding some light on how apps can utilize that second screen. This SDK will provide native Windows APIs for dual-screen development and a dual-screen Hyper-V emulator so you can deploy and test your existing Universal Windows Platform (UWP) and Win32 (including Windows Forms and Windows Presentation Foundation) apps.

Neowin has recorded a video of the emulator, which you can watch below, and in it you can see how the Microsoft Launcher works over dual screens, and what multitasking is like - for exampling moving an app from one screen to the other.

With the Surface Duo, Surface Neo, and several dual-screen PCs on the way, optimizing content for multiple displays is increasingly important for Microsoft.

According to Microsoft, "the emulator simulates the physical device so you can see how your apps interact with Windows 10X".
