You Can Vote To Name NASA’s Next Mars Rover”

"Thousands of students have shared their recommendations for a name that can quit our rover and the staff proud", stated Lori Glaze, director of NASA's planetary science division in at the agency's headquarters in Washington.

NASA has picked three submissions in each of the three age categories - grades K-4, 5-8 and 9-12.

Tenacity, K-4, Eamon Reilly of Pennsylvania.

Vision, 5-8, Hadley Green of Mississippi.

Endurance, K-4, Oliver Jacobs of Virginia.

Ingenuity, 9-12, Vaneeza Rupani of Alabama.

The nine student finalists are invited to discuss the names that they proposed in a panel including Lori Glaze (NASA Planetary Science Division director), Jessica Watkins (NASA astronaut), Nick Wiltsie (NASA-JPL rover driver), and Clara Ma (the victor of the 2009 competition that named the Curiosity rover; she was sixth-grade student at the time).

NASA winnowed down the checklist to nine finalists and announced the most likely names Tuesday. Note, you've less than a week left to cast your vote as the voting closes at midnight EST (0500 GMT) on January 28.

There's information about the Mars 2020 mission here.

Nasa will be sending its next rover to Mars later this year and members of the public will help to decide what it should be called.

NASA officials said in a statement that after the poll closes, the nine student finalists will discuss their rover names with a panel including Glaze, NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins, NASA-JPL rover driver Nick Wiltsie and Clara Ma, who earned the honor of naming the Mars rover Curiosity as a sixth-grade student in 2009.

"It will search for signs of past microbial life, characterize the planet's climate and geology, collect samples for future return to Earth, and pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet", the news release states.

Now, there's an online poll - which is open until next Monday - where you can vote for your favorite.

The Mars 2020 Rover is in the final stages of launch preparation. The victor will be invited to watch the rover launch in July from Cape Canaveral in Florida. Almost 4,700 eligible judge volunteers were selected from a diverse pool of educators, professionals, and space enthusiasts and were instrumental in selecting the semifinalists. The final name will be announced in March.
