Lunar New Year festivities canceled as dozens die of China virus

Lunar New Year festivities canceled as dozens die of China virus”

People in Wuhan, where the outbreak started, and more than a dozen nearby cities are unable to move about easily or leave after authorities shut down buses, trains and planes and set up roadblocks to limit the spread of the virus.

Some experts believe the virus is not as risky as the one that caused the 2002-03 outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which also began in China and killed almost 800 people, or the one that caused Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), which has killed more than 700 people since 2012.

News reported the man fell ill after returning to his home in Washington State following a trip Wuhan, China where the first few cases were reported on Jan.17.

It was not immediately clear if his death was already counted in the official toll of 41, of which 39 were in the central province of Hubei, where Wuhan is located.

"We ask Global Positioning System to ask people presenting with respiratory illness their travel history", she said.

An infected man from Wuhan travelled to Ho Chi Minh City earlier this month and passed the virus on to his son. The central province of Hubei is home to almost 60 million people.

"While this situation poses a very serious public health threat, CDC believes that the immediate risk to the public is low at this time."

A man in his 30s who was the first confirmed case in the U.S. He is in stable condition at the Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Wash.

Friday morning, a Chicago woman became the second confirmed USA patient diagnosed with the risky new virus from China.

When his condition worsened, his family contacted the hospital and took him there yesterday where he remains in isolation with pneumonia-like symptoms.

Speaking to reporters at a news conference after the first coronavirus was confirmed in Victoria, Australia's Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy said that there might be more cases of the virus owing to significant travel from Wuhan city to Australia in the past.

Nine people in Queensland have returned negative results for coronavirus, with authorities on Saturday still waiting on results from another possible case.

It has been confirmed that five people are being tested for the virus in Scotland.

Ever since China put a ban on transportation services in several of its provinces following the outbreak of Coronavirus, there has been uncertainty and fear in the mind of Kerala native Anaz*, a fifth year medical student, who has been stranded in Wuhan City of Hubei Province of China, the epicentre of the epidemic.

The World Health Organisation has declared the new coronavirus an "emergency in China" but stopped short of declaring it of global concern.

Human-to-human transmission has been observed in the virus. Three of the six teams, from Shanghai, Guangdong and military hospitals have arrived in Wuhan. There is growing anger within Wuhan that authorities did not do enough in the initial days of the outbreak to determine the extent of the spread of the virus, with misdiagnosis due to limited testing kits, lack of staff and space for patients rampant. Most of the fatalities have been elderly people, many with pre-existing conditions, the World Health Organization said. It can cause pneumonia, which has been deadly in some cases. It can also cause fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

Airports around the world have stepped up screening of passengers from China, though some health officials and experts have questioned the effectiveness of such screenings and of the lockdown. "That is why cases were detected in travellers to other cities in China and in other countries".

"The atmosphere of Lunar New Year is not as good as last year even if there's no coronavirus", said May Wen, wearing a blue face mask.

The outbreak has dampened lunar new year celebrations in Wuhan and across the country. Sections of the Great Wall near the capital were also closed off.
