People still want plastic bottles, says Coca-Cola

People still want plastic bottles, says Coca-Cola”

"If Coca Cola want to ensure their bottles are not single-use, we would love for them to introduce a comprehensive refill system, where the same item is cleaned and re-used multiple times". In an audit, Break Free from Plastic ranked Coca-Cola as the world's top plastic-polluting corporation in 2019.

Bea Perez, the head of sustainability at Coca-Cola told BBC at the World Economic Forum that the company couldn't ditch plastic as it could not alienate its customers or cause sales to drop.

Sian Sutherland, of A Plastic Planet campaign group, reacted angrily, saying: 'Shame on Coca-Cola!'

She added: "Do they really think the public enjoy seeing beaches and landfills covered in plastic waste, killing marine life and degrading into toxic microplastics that are now in our food? ". Perez also said that switching to aluminum or glass bottles could increase the company's carbon footprint (presumably because of the extra weight to transport glass bottles, and the energy that would be required to clean them if they were to be reused).

However, the brand said it was committed to its sustainability goals, which include making all consumer packaging 100 percent recyclable by 2025, recycling as many plastic bottles as it uses by 2030, and using packaging that's made of at least 50 percent recycled material by the end of the decade. The company has promised to work around the world to streamline bottle collection and reduce waste.

"Business will not be in business if we do not accommodate customers", she explained.

The company still plans to reach its environmental goals by or before the year 2030. "So because we alter our semi automatic infrastructure, proceed into innovate and recycling, we also need to show the customer what the chances are". They will change with us'.

Perez said she respected the idealism of youth activists, such as 19-year-old campaigner Melati Wijsen, who with her sister Isabel, convinced the island of Bali to ban single-use plastic bags, straws and styrofoam last year.

Bea Perez's comments echo those of her company's chief executive James Quincey, who stated late past year that Coca-Cola has no plans to "engineer a strategic shift from plastics to aluminium".

The group's Von Hernandez said: 'Their continued reliance on single-use plastic packaging translates to pumping more throwaway plastic into the environment.
