Edmonton Oilers, Zack Kassian agree to four-year contract extension”

Forward Zach Kassian has signed a four-year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers.

Tkachuk laid some heavy hits during the last meeting between the two sides January 11, which resulted in Kassian pounding the Flames forward before calling him out postgame for refusing to fight back.

Sean Monahan scored the shootout victor and the Calgary Flames beat the rival Edmonton Oilers 4-3 on Wednesday night in a heated game that featured a much-anticipated fight between Matthew Tkachuk and Zack Kassian. His biggest impact has been felt as an enforcer, especially in the infamous December 27 meeting against the Flames when he laid a beating on Tkachuk after the Flames forward took two sizable - and confrontational - hits on him.

The Oilers forward responded by grabbing Tkachuk by the scruff of his sweater and landing 10 punches while the Flames forward hid his face behind his gloves. It was a costly penalty as the Flames scored on the ensuing power play and won 4-3.

If nothing else, it looks as if Matthew Tkachuk will have to share a division with Kassian for at least the next four years.

"Now it's over", Kassian said. "A lot of people didn't want me to do it, but I wanted to".

National Hockey League disciplinarian George Parros was in the building in Edmonton to make sure things didn't get out of hand.

Kassian, 29, is scoring at a career-best pace at the moment.

Edmonton tied the game six minutes into the second period as Yamamoto scored his fourth goal in his nine games up with the big club this season on a rebound.

He was originally drafted No. 13 overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2009 NHL Draft.

Arriving in Edmonton via trade from the Montreal Canadiens in December 2015, Kassian is now locked in as part of the Oilers' core for the foreseeable future.
