John Roberts Stops Rand Paul From Revealing Whistleblower's Identity

So though Roberts has extensive powers to rule as chief justice of the supreme court in that capacity, his rulings can still be overruled by a majority vote of the Senate, according to the Congressional Research Service. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) submitted during the impeachment trial against President Donald Trump on January 30. Paul's questions, which demanded it.

Paul said he opted against prolonging Thursday's session by forcing a debate on whether or not to overrule the decision by the chief justice to decline to read the question as drafted. He gave no reason for declining to read the question.

Reports started emerging Wednesday that Roberts planned to block the question from Paul.

The president's defense team has argued that questions of witnesses would require a prolonged legal process as courts sort out claims of executive privilege and whether witnesses would be able to disclose information about their conversations with the president. "My question is about the actions of known Obama partisans within the NSC and House staff and how they are reported to have conspired before impeachment proceedings had even begun".

Paul seemed to be referring to the person who filed a complaint against Trump over the president's July 2019 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. "One of them now works for Adam Schiff, and one of them is someone who was involved in the origins of the impeachment inquiry".

After his question was blocked by Chief Justice John Roberts during impeachment proceedings on Thursday, Senator Rand Paul pushed back against speculation that the question named the Ukraine whistleblower, telling reporters it merely addressed the role of two partisan staffers who he believes may have coordinated President Trump's impeachment.

"I don't know who the whistleblower is".

Paul later tweeted a copy of his question, which included the name of the alleged whistleblower. "I think it's very important whether or not a group of Democratic activists, part of the Obama-Biden administration were working together for years looking for an opportunity to impeach the president".

Cruz, Hawley, and Sen.

Senators will likely vote on Friday on whether to allow testimony from additional witnesses, beyond those heard during the inquiry led by House Democrats. "Any talk of the whistleblower at this point is a distraction, and any effort to name the whistleblower is retaliation for lawfully reporting misconduct".
