Death toll in coronavirus rises to 361 as man dies in Philippines

The makeshift hospital - called the Huoshenshan - will be staffed by some 1,400 medical staff from the Chinese armed forces, including the People's Liberation Army.

The two infections were determined during tests at the Germersheim military barracks, where 115 of the evacuees were brought for quarantine.

The Philippine Department of Health said a 44-year-old Chinese man from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak in central China, was admitted on January 25 after experiencing fever, cough and sore throat.

"This patient came from the epicenter of this outbreak".

"We declare that talks have broken down, and industrial action has officially begun", Winnie Yu, chairman of the Hospital Authority Employees Alliance, told journalists on Sunday.

Philippines' Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III gave his condolences to the deceased patient's family and wants to emphasize for the public "that this is an imported case with no evidence of local transmission". He was one of the two confirmed cases in the country; the other was a 38-year-old Chinese woman he was travelling with from Wuhan. There are more than 11,000 cases in Hubei province, where Wuhan is located, state television said on Monday.

Chinese stock and commodity markets plunged at the open in their first session since January 23, when the outbreak of the newly identified virus had claimed only 17 lives in Wuhan city in Hubei province.

The toll climbed to 361 with 57 deaths reported on Sunday, state-run Xinhua quoted the commission's report as saying.

The total number of infections now stands at more than 14,380, according to Chinese authorities.

But 10 days after locking down Wuhan, authorities imposed similar draconian measures on Wenzhou, a coastal city of nine million people in Zhejiang province, part of the eastern industrial heartland that has powered China's economic rise over recent decades. Non-essential sectors will be allowed flexibility in returning to production.

This is the highest tally for any province in China after ground-zero Hubei.

Stock markets in Shanghai and Shenzhen plunged by almost nine percent on Monday morning as investors returned from a Lunar New Year holiday that had been extended to stop people travelling around China.

There are 14,497 confirmed cases of infection in China, 116 more than this time yesterday.

Also temporarily banned is travel to China, Hong Kong and Macau. The United Arab Emirates reported its fifth case of the coronavirus. Pakistani students studying in Wuhan University are appealing to the Pakistani government for evacuation.

As of Saturday, the novel coronavirus epidemic, now declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO), has sicken over 14,300 people and killed over 300 in China.

The NHC reported the number of new cases of virus detection within last 24 hours rose to 2,590. The study used mathematical models based on officially reported cases. The Philippines expanded its travel ban to include all foreigners coming from China, widening an earlier restriction that covered only those from Hubei province.

On Sunday, the foreign ministry announced an entry ban on all foreign nationals arriving from mainland China.
