Impeachment managers conclude closing arguments, senators statements to take place today”

Leading Republicans took to the talk show circuit Sunday to defend their expected acquittal of U.S. President Donald Trump at his Senate trial next week - despite offering sharp criticism of his role in the Ukraine scandal.

Senators acknowledge the House Democratic managers have essentially proven their case, that Trump abused power and obstructed Congress, by leveraging USA military aid to push Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden to thwart the 2020 election.

The final outcome of the case seems secure, with Republicans holding a 53-47 majority in the Senate and none indicating they plan to vote to remove Trump from office.

After a day of debate, the Senate voted 51-49 to block allowing more evidence from being introduced in the trial. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., acknowledged that the House managers proved their case regarding the factual allegations that Trump asked Ukraine to investigate former Biden and his son Hunter and that he withheld military aid as leverage, but that this did not warrant impeachment. Democrats had hoped that new witnesses and evidence - particularly in light of reported revelations in an unpublished book by former National Security Advisor John Bolton - might have changed the dynamic in the partisan proceedings.

. The trial is expected to end soon with an acquittal for Trump.

"And we get to send a message at the ballot box that cheating, lying, involving a foreign country in our own domestic politics, not to mention abuse of power more broadly and bad administration, that that's not okay, that we can do better".

"I'm not letting the senators off the hook".

The impeachment trial has resumed Monday as House impeachment managers gave their closing arguments.

The spokesman said that the last get-together between the two was on October 16, a meeting that was supposed to be about the president's controversial decisision to withdraw American troops from Syria but was cut short when Democrats walked out after Trump insulted the House speaker, including calling her her a "third-grade politician".

The Democratic case, Starr said, told Americans that "your vote in the last election is hereby declared null and void, and by the way we are not going to allow you, the American people, to sit in judgment on this president and his record in November". That is not an excuse that should be used by any senator for not fulfilling their obligation to hold a fair trial. Michael Bennet, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren - will deliver their statements early in Monday's session before they travel to Iowa for tonight's caucus.
