Joaquin Phoenix used his BAFTAs speech to call out ‘systemic racism’”

On Sunday 2 February, in the Royal Albert Hall, Joaquin Phoenix picked up the BAFTA for best actor for his role in the film Joker.

Bong Joon-ho's black comedy "Parasite" won two titles, including best foreign language film, at this year's British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards. While giving his acceptance speech, the actor urged the industry to undo this "system of oppression" and have fair nominations as he felt "conflicted" taking away the award as there are many deserving fellow actors that didn't have same privileges as he did.

"I think we are sending a very clear message to people of colour that you're not welcome here". I think people just want to be acknowledged, appreciated and respected for their work. "This is not a self-righteous condemnation because I'm ashamed to say I am part of the problem".

While presenting an award, "Cats" star Rebel Wilson later joked about male nominees, "I don't think I could do what they do".

"See - a rich man with a gold statue all of a sudden is a voice that should be listened to when he agrees with me", comedian Allistair Williams added when responding to someone praising Phoenix's "systemic racism" speech. Because he delivered a powerful message about the lack of diversity in the film industry.

Sam Mendes's World War One epic 1917 is also predicted to sweep the floor tonight, likely winning best director, as well as best film and outstanding British film. "Although that's what we give ourselves every year".

The father of three added, "I know that both Pippa, Chair of BAFTA, and Amanda, BAFTA CEO, share that frustration and continue to work tirelessly to ensure that creative talent is discovered and supported". In Hollywood, missed the ceremony because of "family obligations" but asked co-star Margot Robbie to read his speech, saying; "Hey Britain, heard you just became single, welcome to the club".

It won the best foreign language film honor at the Golden Globes Awards in January, following a series of trophies bestowed by U.S. film critics associations. "I'll try to do better and I hope you will too", he said.

"Sustainability is very important to BAFTA, and we're doing more than ever before", the academy said in a statement prior to the event.

"Both here in the United Kingdom and in many other countries across the world we are lucky to have incredible filmmakers, actors, producers, directors and technicians - men and women from all backgrounds and ethnicities enriching our lives through film", he continued.
