Trump impeachment trial day 12: All the latest updates

President Donald Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have not spoken with each other since October, a Pelosi spokesman told CNN on Monday.

The trial's outcome will have a lasting effect "not only for this president but for all future presidents: whether or not the office of the presidency of the United States of America is above the law", Crow added.

The Democratic-led House impeached Trump on December 18 on charges of abuse of power for asking Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden and obstruction of Congress for blocking testimony and documents sought by lawmakers in their investigation. He accused Democrats of trying to take away the public's ability to choose the USA president.

Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Mitt Romney (R-Utah) both voted with Democrats in the failed bid to compel witnesses last week.

President Donald Trump's lawyer Ken Starr speaks on the Senate floor on February 3, 2019. But even as they were poised to acquit him, several Republican senators were rejecting that assertion, saying his actions were wrong and inappropriate - just not grounds for the Senate to oust him.

"Impeachment is an extraordinary remedy - a tool only to be used in rare instances of grave misconduct", Crow said.

All that's left, as the Senate opened for four hours of final arguments is for Americans to decide what they think as the third presidential impeachment trial in the nation's history begins to close.

Democrats said he conditioned the aid on Ukraine announcing investigations, including into his potential 2020 Democratic election challenger Joe Biden.

"A president free of accountability is a danger to the beating heart of our democracy", Schiff said. House impeachment managers and Trump's legal team are scheduled to first make their closing arguments, which came after senators voted last Friday to not call in any witnesses in the trial. Key Republicans said they had heard enough.

"I hope Republicans & the American people realize that the totally partisan Impeachment Hoax is exacty that, a Hoax", he said. Trump stands accused of abusing the powers of his office, illegally withholding aid to a vulnerable ally, trying to extort a foreign country into helping him cheat in an American election, trying to cover it up, and getting caught.

House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), whose committee drafted the two articles of impeachment against Trump, wasn't in the Senate on Monday.

Four contenders for the Democratic nomination - Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar and Michael Bennet - were required to be present at the impeachment trial. It's against this backdrop that the political dispute seemed to fall relatively neatly into two camps: those who demanded accountability for a presidential abuse on a historic scale, and those who argued that Trump did not do what all of the evidence showed him doing.

Trump was also asked whether he had given any thought to delaying Tuesday's nationally televised "State of the Union" speech to a joint session of Congress.
