BlackBerry smartphones are dead, sales officially ending in August”

The last BlackBerry phone prior to the TCL deal was the Priv. The announcement is a bit of a shock, and what this actually means for the BlackBerry brand as well as BB mobile devices is now still unclear. Whether BlackBerry will be partnering with a different OEM to continue making devices, or if this will be the end of BB devices is something we now don't know.

At the end of August, TCL will no longer have rights to design, make or sell BlackBerry smartphones, the Canadian company said in a message shared on Twitter. The new phones were a mix between Android and BlackBerry's DNA: improved security features and a software suite meant for professionals.

TCL Communication, the electronics company that has been making BlackBerry (BB) smartphones, said Monday that the partnership has ended and it will stop selling BlackBerry-branded mobile devices in August.

But with the tweet claiming that TCL will lose the rights to "design, manufacture, or sell" any BlackBerry mobile devices (presumably because TCL is unable or unwilling to extend its licensing agreement with BlackBerry Limited) this summer, this would end TCL's stewardship of BlackBerry's phone legacy.

The dissolution of a critical partnership between TCL and Blackberry could be the death knell for one of the world's most recognized smart phone brands. Those of you that own BlackBerry smartphones shouldn't be anxious, however.

Since then, the company launched the KeyOne, Key2 and Key2 LE as well as a few less popular all touchscreen phones, but it seems - for now at least - that BlackBerry phones are dead.

TCL declined to comment further on this when we asked for further information. Enterprise and consumer users alike all fell in love with the physical BlackBerry keyboard, and who could forget BlackBerry Messenger?

TCL also produces smartphones under the Alcatel brand.
