Coronavirus: First death outside China reported in Philippines”

Meanwhile, the mysterious respiratory illness, which now can be spread from human-to-human contact, has infected at least six people throughout the United States, with confirmed cases in Washington state, California, Arizona and IL, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The 44-year-old man, from Wuhan, China, the center of the outbreak, died in hospital on Saturday after developing "severe pneumonia", the Philippine Department of Health said in a news release.

The Philippines on Sunday reported the first death outside China from the deadly virus that has spread to 25 countries, including India, taking the total toll to 305.

The man's 38-year-old female companion, also from Wuhan, first tested positive for the virus and remains in hospital isolation in Manila. Both patients arrived in the Philippines via Hong Kong on Jan 21.

The US, Australia and an increasing number of other countries have barred the arrival of foreigners from China and are requiring their own citizens to be quarantined.

"Facing the 2019-nCoV (official name for coronavirus) pneumonia outbreak, China has been working closely in solidarity with the global community to protect people's lives and health security", the ministry said in a statement to the media.

However, some countries are responding to fears of the virus spreading by ramping up border controls.

Despite imposing drastic travel restrictions at home, China has chafed at those imposed by foreign governments, criticising Washington's order barring entry to most non-citizens who visited China in the past two weeks.

Taiwan is asking its diplomats to talk to governments where Taiwanese airlines fly to ensure more flights are not cut off due the island's inclusion by the World Health Organization as part of China due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Eleven more British nationals are reportedly arriving in the United Kingdom from Wuhan later today missing the first evacuation flight on Thursday. Around 250 Indonesians were being evacuated from Hubei.

The first death from the disease outside China was confirmed today after a man died in the Philippines. China says about 500 Taiwanese are in the province.

Vietnam suspended all flights from mainland China from yesterday, while Russian Federation announced it would halt visa-free tourism for Chinese nationals and stop issuing them work visas. The entry ban will go into effect on Tuesday, South Korean Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said.

The death toll from China's coronavirus outbreak has jumped to 304, the government said on Sunday, as foreign nations imposed extraordinary travel restrictions on China, and airlines suspended flights.

Britain, Russia and Sweden are among the countries confirming their first infections. One death was reported in the city, about 60 km east of Wuhan.

Local authorities in quarantined areas must disinfect faeces and sewage, the ministry also said.

Genetic traces of the coronavirus were found in the faeces of some patients, said the health authority of Shenzhen, one of the most populous cities in China.
