Democrats return to leadoff Iowa for final pitch to voters

Democrats return to leadoff Iowa for final pitch to voters”

Democratic presidential candidates like Joe Biden are traversing Iowa Friday, days before an all-important vote launches the party's nomination contest.

But how they do it is complicated.

All caucuses are open only to Democrats registered to vote in Iowa.

Iowa matters because it's first, but how did that happen? Abby Finkenauer and Cindy Axne, two first-term Democrats who won previously Republican-held seats - an effort to demonstrate that Biden could help down-ballot Democrats.

That tends to pose problems for a lot of voters: parents who don't have child care options; employees who work irregular schedules and can't take time off; and people with disabilities who may struggle to navigate a process that demands a lengthy amount of physical presence, often in a crowded room.

They begin at 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. ET) and are expected to last roughly an hour.

Just three days before the Iowa caucuses, former Maryland Rep.

"Caucusing is about participating together with your neighbours, bringing folks collectively for a neighbourhood assembly", Christina Freundlich, Ms Klobuchar's deputy early states marketing campaign director, stated. In 2016, slightly more than 171,000 people turned out for the Democratic caucuses.

"His goal is to get his message at a time and place where he can get people's attention - and right now it's Iowa", he said. The record was 239,000 in 2008.

Indeed, talking to Iowa Democrats can be dizzying.

How will we know who wins? When they get in office it's about what Congress allows them to do.

It remained unclear whether Sanders could escape Washington in time Friday to host his campaign's 6:00 pm concert in a suburb of Iowa's capital, Des Moines, featuring indie band Bon Iver. That's why the campaigns have built up operations with hundreds of staffers and volunteers in the state, to show their grassroots support and campaign strength of organization. People who are working, traveling, attending college or escaping a frigid winter are out of luck.

In particular, he cited "draconian cuts" the White House proposed to the budgets of "the very agencies that we need to fight this outbreak", including the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

When asked why he would choose to return to DC instead of heading to Iowa on Monday, when those crucial caucuses take place, Bennet said, "I think we have to be where we have to be". Nationally, warnings are issued with regularity by some pundits and Democratic voters about the peril of a Sanders candidacy. "He's a good guy, and I'm not gonna get into - he must be deciding things are getting a little tight", he said with a smile.

There is one caveat in Iowa.

Among them is Sanders, 78 and the oldest candidate in the race, who enjoys strong support from young voters.

WAUKEE, Iowa (AP) - Pete Buttigieg and Joe Biden stepped up their criticisms of Bernie Sanders on Thursday, as moderates are under growing pressure to boring any momentum the progressive senator may gain heading into next week's Iowa caucuses. Warren is so high-energy she seems to have been shot out of a cannon, doing a high kick alongside Jonathan Van Ness of "Queer Eye", while low-key, polished-to-a-shine Buttigieg strikes me as someone whose childhood friends had to constantly hear from their parents, "Why can't you be more like Pete?" "I don't have a problem there because this is why we are where we are", Manchin said.

Buttigieg was one of the extremely first potential customers to boost with considerable TV buy, which helped improve his tally numbers in the state throughout the fall.

"This is a president who went out there and colluded with a foreign power to try and smear me".

In 2016, Sanders supporters argued that on the first count he had more support than Clinton. Once they arrived, they found it was too crowded to maneuver through the crowds or even to use the restroom. But neither of them has emerged as the undisputed leader of the party's left flank. All other candidates, including billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer, notched no more than three percent support, the poll found.

Up for grabs will be 41 delegates to the Democratic National Convention, where a candidate will need to secure 1,991 delegates to become the party's nominee.

Iowa offers just a tiny percentage of the delegates needed to win the nomination but plays an outsize role in culling primary fields.

Then why are they so important? Her defenders saw it as reality.

It's all why - despite the caucuses being more than 90% white - as of two weeks ago, the candidates had spent $50 million on ads in Iowa alone.
