Murkowski rebukes Trump, Senate, but says she will vote to acquit

Murkowski rebukes Trump, Senate, but says she will vote to acquit”

For Manchin, voting to convict Trump could risk the end of a political career that has become increasingly hard to navigate in a state where the president's popularity remains at 59 percent, according to polling by Morning Consult.

Murkowski, who is an unpredictable moderate in a polarized Washington D.C., on Monday declared she would not vote to convict Trump.

But Varney said despite the backlash from the Democrats, America stands tall. "The Constitution provides for impeachment, but does not demand it in all instances", she said.

Following both sides' arguments, the Senate adjourned as a court of impeachment and reconvened in normal legislative session.

Vanity Fair's Gabriel Sherman reports that he has spoken to several Republicans who say Trump is keeping track of people he believes "crossed him during the impeachment", and has an "enemies list that is growing by the day".

The president often uses the format to highlight his or her administration's accomplishments.

The votes appear to be in the President's favor; just one day before he speaks to the nation. "A lot of us in the front line felt that wasn't helpful".

Other Democrats have questioned the decision to impeach Mr. Trump without exhausting the House's legal remedies to compel the testimony of key White House witnesses. The second article charges him with obstruction of Congress.

But most Democrats defend Ms. Pelosi.

"They won't [apologize], of course, but they should", he said.

However, Manchin and his Democratic colleagues Doug Jones of Alabama and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona have left open the possibility that they might vote to acquit Trump.

"The president's behavior was shameful and wrong".

"It is the speaker who launched impeachment", Varney said.

"I think he shouldn't have done it". As we discussed, Alexander read the call summary, heard the arguments, weighed the evidence, and concluded that Trump is guilty - of an offensive that isn't especially important. "That is a debate I am absolutely confident we are winning".

He called for an end to the partisan "era of impeachment". His presidency doesn't reflect my values and I don't want four more years of it. "The Senate should be ashamed by the rank partisanship that has been on display here", Murkowski said.

"She's violated her own criteria in this case when she said it had to be bipartisan", said Tom Davis, a former Republican congressman from Virginia.

What I am certain about is that Trump won't get my vote this year.

"To those who would say that the president will now feel unbound, he already felt unbound", Mr. Schiff said. "I don't think there's a real reason to (talk about it)".

"The opportunity for Republicans is to make gains with those voters who think impeachment is just out of step and a zealous enterprise", Mr. Curbelo said, "and for Democrats, it's with those voters who are growing exhausted of all the scandal and controversy and wanted a more fair and complete process in the Senate". About an hour before the Senate resumed the trial for closing arguments at 11 a.m. Monday, just two reporters waited for senators at the basement subway that leads to Senate office buildings.

Trump's acquittal is all but guaranteed, with at least 20 Republicans needed to reach 67 votes needed for removal from office.

On Friday, the Senate voted 51 to 49 against calling witnesses to the Senate trial.

Both sides decried the role that partisanship has played in the impeachment process and warned that the outcome will likely do lasting damage to the country. "It is the speaker who spitefully said 'impeachment is forever'". "So what's the big deal?"

"The president has done nothing wrong", added White House Counsel Pat Cipollone.

"But", she added, "we never have that expectation".
