World Health Organization forecasts 81 pct cancer jump in poorer countries

World Health Organization forecasts 81 pct cancer jump in poorer countries”

In a report, the Geneva-based agency said that these countries had focused their limited resources on combating infectious diseases and improving maternal and child health instead of fighting cancer.

These are the most common types of cancer in Women! However, cancer types linked to obesity and sedentary lifestyles, such as breast cancer and colorectal cancer, are also increasing, and are associated with higher socioeconomic status, the report said.

"Our results suggest that to eliminate cervical cancer, it will be necessary to achieve both high vaccination coverage and a high uptake of screening and treatment, especially in countries with the highest burden of the disease", said research team co-director Marc Brisson, a professor at Laval University in Quebec, Canada. About 1 in 6 deaths across the globe happen due to cancer.

According to the findings, those in lower income brackets were less likely to recognise cancer risk factors compared to their higher-income peers.

The annual report found that overall cancer cases in the world would rise by 60 percent by 2040 and said tobacco use was responsible for 25 percent of cancer deaths.

The most common cancers diagnosed in men are prostate, lung, and colorectal cancers.

The UN health agency on Tuesday warned cancer cases would rise by 81 percent in low- and middle-income countries by 2040 because of a lack of investment in prevention and care. In addition, 64 per cent of the world's daily smokers live in only 10 countries and more than 50 per cent of the world's male smokers live in three countries: China, India, and Indonesia. More than 90 per cent of patients with oral cancer have low or lower-middle socioeconomic status. It is responsible for approximately 22% of cancer deaths.

The incidence of colorectal cancer is increasing in the most developed states in India and in urban populations.

The World Health Organization reports cancer is on the increase globally.

"Thus, elimination of cervical cancer in India will have a major impact on global elimination of the disease as a public health problem".
