Ireland Complete Preparations For Scotland Clash Later

Ireland Complete Preparations For Scotland Clash Later”

Stuart Hogg apologised to his Scotland team-mates after the captain's "schoolboy error" proved costly against Ireland in Saturday's Six Nations Test.

Ireland's fly-half Jonathan Sexton (C) scores his team's first try during the Six Nations global rugby union match between Ireland and Scotland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, on February 1, 2020.

"I am bitterly disappointed to drop the ball over the line as the forwards had set me up brilliantly", he said.

"It was a decent start", the 44-year-old Englishman said.

"Our performance was summed up in the last five minutes we asked the lads to stand for something this week and you could easily see the true Irish grit".

The 34-year-old Irish great was satisfied with his performance.

"To have the pressures of doing something he passionately wanted to do, to lead his country for the first time, and all of those new bits that come in around that and then deal with coming back from such an injury and leading the side like he did, hats off to Johnny, that's a magnificent effort".

Farrell said: "For him not to touch a ball and not to fight in anger until probably Thursday of this week, that says it all about the man, doesn't it really?"

Farrell acknowledged there were things to improve on next week leading up to Saturday's home game with Grand Slam holders Wales, who opened with a 42-0 thrashing of Italy.

The outhalves traded more penalties but Ireland proceeded to give up possession any time they got within striking distance of putting the game away, anathema to the Schmidt years.

"We will work to get better as a coaching group and a playing group".

Having been crowned Grand Slam champions in 2018, Ireland failed to mount a title defence a year ago after losing their opening match to England.

"The first game of the tournament is all about winning", he said.

'We're alive and that's where we want to be, ' said Sexton.

"I think we knew we had an opportunity to win".

Stuart Hogg of Scotland drops the ball over the line resulting in no try during the 2020 Guinness Six Nations match between Ireland and Scotland at Aviva Stadium on February 01, 2020 in Dublin, Dublin.

"It was just a schoolboy error".

"However, we are in a better place to when we came back from the World Cup".
