Korean woman tests positive for coronavirus after Thailand visit”

A South Korean woman has tested positive for the novel coronavirus after taking a trip to Thailand - marking the first time a foreign tourist has become infected after visiting the country.

The 18th case is a 21-year-old South Korean woman and the daughter of the 16th patient, who had returned from a trip to Thailand on January 19 but moved freely for around two weeks before being diagnosed with the virus.

Thailand has reported 19 cases of coronavirus, among the highest number of infections outside of China.

The KCDC said that she has been placed in quarantine with efforts under way to find out where she has been and whom she met, to see if they too have symptoms.

On Saturday, a 48-year-old Chinese man, who worked as a guide in Japan, arrived here and tested positive.

The viral outbreak has climbed to more than 20,600 cases worldwide and at least 426 deaths.

Most factories in China have extended their Lunar New Year holiday until the 9th of February due to the coronavirus.

He was the second person to have been tested with the virus after the first incident was reported on January 20.

On Friday, Thai officials confirmed its first case of person-to-person transmission in a taxi driver, according to Reuters.

"The situation doesn't look good", she said.

The KCDC said that as of early Wednesday, the virus that is thought to have originated in Wuhan, China, has claimed some 480 lives, while infecting over 23,000 people in 27 countries.

Two of Hyundai's suppliers, Kyungshin and Yura Corporation, told Reuters they were trying to increase production at their factories in South Korea and South-East Asia in order to compensate for lost Chinese production.

A South Korean ban came into force today blocking entry to foreigners who have visited China's Hubei province in the previous 14 days.

Concern about the spread of the virus is growing in South Korea, where 16 cases have been identified so far.
