Lesotho’s First Lady Turns Herself In For Questioning Over Murder

Lesotho’s First Lady Turns Herself In For Questioning Over Murder”

She is now in police custody and is to be formally charged in court on Wednesday for allegedly killing Thomas Thabane's previous wife.

Lipolelo Thabane, was killed outside her home in the capital Maseru two days before his inauguration in 2017 as ambushed, shot several times at close range and died on the side of a road.

Maesaiah Thabane, 42, is set to be charged with murder in connection with the 2017 killing of the prime minister's former wife, police said Tuesday.

But his current wife vanished when the police called her in to testify, prompting the issuing of an arrest warrant.

Maesaiah went missing last month after she was asked to hand herself in to police for questioning regarding an investigation into the killing of Lipolelo.

Lesotho, a mountain state encircled by South Africa, three-quarters of which lies more than 1800m above sea level, is one of the world's poorest countries and has one of Africa's highest levels of HIV/AIDS prevalence.

"She has been charged with murder alongside eight others who are in Lesotho and South Africa", Deputy Police Commissioner Paseka Mokete told reporters.

He and Maesaiah married two months after the murder.

It was earlier revealed that call records showed that someone at the murder scene had called Thabane's mobile phone on the day of the crime. The premier didn't specify when he would resign, saying only it would occur "when all is in order".

Last month, hundreds of opposition supporters marched through the streets of Maseru as the prime minister was questioned by the police, demanding he step down with immediate effect.

Senior members of the governing All Basotho Convention (ABC) party have accused the prime minister of hampering investigations into the killing.
