Messi hits out at Barca director Abidal for bad-mouthing players

Messi hits out at Barca director Abidal for bad-mouthing players”

"The players [are responsible] for what happens on the pitch and we are the first to admit when we haven't been good".

Valverde was sacked when Barcelona were top of La Liga.

Lionel Messi has hit back at suggestions from Barcelona technical secretary Eric Abidal that the players got Ernesto Valverde the sack.

"I believe that if you talk about the players (in this way) you should name names instead of worrying everyone and encouraging rumours that are far from certain".

Messi referred to a line in Abidal's interview with Sport in which he said, "A lot of the players were not satisfied and many of them were not working very hard".

It will also have lasting consequences, bringing internal division into the open and laying bare the deep dissatisfaction many in the dressing room feel with the club's board.

Abidal granted several interviews to Spanish media outlets on Wednesday (AEDT) and, in a chat with Catalan publication Sport, the Frenchman outlined the thought process behind Valverde's sacking in January.

"Those in charge of sporting direction should also face up to their responsibilities and above all take charge of their own decisions".

"The relationship between the coach and dressing room was always good, but there are things that as an ex-player I can sense".

Messi's response can also be seen in the context of Abidal's claim, in a defiant, challenging tone, that there had been no offer made to Xavi to take over, effectively accusing the former player of lying.

Writing on his official Instagram account and specifically highlighting a section of Abidal's quotes, Messi said: "I honestly don't like to do these things, but I think everyone has to be responsible for their tasks and take care of their decisions".

The Barcelona sporting director defended the reason for his dismissal. Nor did they succeed in bringing in a striker during this transfer window.
