Verstappen: 'Maybe God is with Hamilton but he's not God'

Verstappen: 'Maybe God is with Hamilton but he's not God'”

Verstappen reckons the Briton - who became a six-time World Champion previous year - would be vulnerable and would make more mistakes if Red Bull can produce a vehicle to match the Mercedes and therefore give Verstappen the tools to truly challenge Hamilton's dominance.

'When you can put the pressure on it is a lot harder for the guy in the lead.

Speaking to Sky F1's Natalie Pinkham, Max Verstappen has urged Red Bull to "step up" and challenge Mercedes this season. "Of course we want to start the title".

While Hamilton's sixth title success has sealed his place as one of F1's greatest ever drivers, Verstappen say he does not view the Briton as someone who can not be defeated. "But I think the stability across all areas - with the drivers and the technical staff - we built momentum in the second half of past year and I think that we're in a very good place to really take the fight to them this season". He is not God, maybe God is with him, but he is not God.

Verstappen says that the mood inside Red Bull is positive about the efforts they have made over the winter. "We really want to mount a challenge to especially Mercedes and I think we can do that. I just hope that from this year on we will fight for the podium at least every time, in the worst case we'll be third".

"Honda did such a great job, each introduction of an engine a year ago brought more performance and more power and it feels we're getting very, very close now to Mercedes", said Horner, whose team were third overall in 2019. "Coming off past year, at the end, we were very competitive", said the Dutch driver. You know, I think we were very competitive. A year ago we couldn't compete in every race, but now we have to do as much as possible in all races get points. "We will then find out during the winter tests whether we have also improved the most". "We have to start strong from the very first race, we have to be there".

Verstappen is looking forward to going wheel-to-wheel against Hamilton more frequently in 2020 but defended his level of aggression, after Hamilton admitted he consciously gave the Red Bull driver more room than he normally would because of the reputation Verstappen has earned over the years. "So it depends a bit on the situation you're in".

"I'm very much looking forward to it, everybody's fired up and everybody's very motivated". Ferrari will go first on February 11, with the new Red Bull expected to appear on the morning of February 12 before Renault carries out a launch event later that afternoon in Paris.
