Vodafone to pay £170m over five years to strip out Huawei kit

Vodafone to pay £170m over five years to strip out Huawei kit”

Apart from Huawei's home market China, several countries including Germany have adopted Huawei's 5G infrastructure.

"Vodafone UK is already largely compliant with these measures and so we have very limited financial exposure, following our decision previous year to pause Huawei in the core of our networks in Europe".

In order to make up for this move, the US government is now working with Microsoft, Dell, AT&T, and others to develop a 5G alternative to Huawei. Read cautioned against using a quota-based approach in the EU.

"We're actively engaged with governments to explain our position for the best way to implement the toolbox", Read said, noting that the European Union has a different starting point than the U.K when it comes to Huawei.

In November, the FCC voted 5-0 to initially designate Huawei and ZTE as national security risks in a move that would bar their USA rural carrier customers from tapping an $8.5 billion government fund to purchase equipment.

The EU last week recommend a "toolbox" for 5G network security that directs restricting access from core network functions, but gives member states more discretion when it comes to implementing guidelines for vendors like Huawei.

Andy Purdy, Huawei's chief USA security officer, commented on the following when he heard about the US government's plans.

According to a British government source, London had few alternatives to Huawei, and excluding the company would have set back the development of the United Kingdom's 5G infrastructure by several years and substantially increased associated costs.

USA government is also pushing more countries to adopt its new software-based 5G infrastructure solution and avoid using Huawei's equipment.

Vodafone chief executive officer Nick Read speaks at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 25, 2019.

"We need to be rolling out 5G to underpin a competitive landscape in a digital society".

"This will take time but we're already leading long-term efforts in this direction by supporting initiatives such as open RAN", he noted.
