Maxwell back for South Africa ODIs and T20Is

Maxwell back for South Africa ODIs and T20Is”

GLENN Maxwell's T20 World Cup ambitions are expected to be boosted with a recall in Australia's squad to tour South Africa.

"He's unlucky on the back of being in sensational form, Stoinis, but all he can do is keep scoring runs and keep throwing his name up there for selection".

And now the star allrounder's mental health break in October has paved the way for a recall to Australia's ODI and Twenty20 squads.

The sorts of pitches and bowlers Maxwell can expect to face across the Indian Ocean are very relevant to the technical and tactical challenge he faced in improving his play against the short stuff, something that Langer had, in typically blunt and honest fashion, spoken publicly about at the back end of a World Cup campaign in which the 31-year-old had failed to exert the sort of influence his outrageous talent demanded.

Batsman Marcus Stoinis, who has enjoyed a superb stretch of form in the ongoing Big Bash League, was not included.

Sydney Sixers quick Sean Abbott reportedly keeps his place in the T20 team after playing his first worldwide in five years against Pakistan last November. He hit three fifties.

In eight digs this season the left-hander has hammered 351 runs, averaging 50.14 at the imposing strike rate of 171.22 with three half-centuries and one whirlwind ton - a spectacular unbeaten 130 from just 61 balls against the Adelaide Strikers on Australia Day.

Maxwell returns to the national set-up having stepped away during last November's T20 series against Sri Lanka to deal with his mental wellbeing.

He made a comeback to cricket in December 2019.

The 31-year-old will return to the worldwide arena in the upcoming limited-overs tour to South Africa.

Australia had missed the aggressive factor against India in the lower middle order.

Twitter has gone into meltdown mode over Stoinis' omission with many online commentators slamming the Australian selectors' decision to snub the top run scorer in the BBL.

National Selector Trevor Hohns said Marsh has been "in tremendous touch" with the bat for the Scorcher and has been bowling well since his return from injury.

Hohns also said Stoinis was first reserve for both formats, but had been considered only for a top-order role. "It is terrific to have a backup player of his calibre in such good form".

ODI squad: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Steve Smith, Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa.
