Philippines records first coronavirus death outside of China

Philippines records first coronavirus death outside of China”

Upon direct order of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force on Sunday began airlifting 1,400 medical staff as well as 58 tons of medical supplies to Wuhan, located in China's Hubei province, the Chinese defense ministry said in a statement.

The man was a companion of a 38-year-old Chinese woman, also from Wuhan, who was the first to test positive for the virus in the Philippines. Seven countries - the U.S., Australia, Germany, Japan, South Korea, the United Emirates and Vietnam - reported new cases of coronavirus on Saturday, while Spain reported its first case, The Associated Press reported.

Amid this deadly situation, China also reported an outbreak of deadly bird flu in Hunan Province.

With Wuhan and some other Chinese cities in virtual lockdown, travel severely restricted and China facing increasing worldwide isolation, fears of wider economic disruption are growing.

The new rules started Saturday - however if you're an Australian citizen, permanent resident or their immediate family, or an aircrew member who has been using appropriate protective equipment, you're exempt. Lam Ching-choi said on Sunday that possible measures include shortening opening times for ports, limiting transportation and introducing laws to curb cross border traffic, the report said.

Outside China, cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in 23 countries, including the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, Italy and Germany.

All of the remaining patients under investigation are stable.

Vietnam counted its seventh case, a Vietnamese-American man who had a two-hour layover in Wuhan on his way from the USA to Ho Chi Minh City. He had a two-hour stopover at a Wuhan airport on the way to Vietnam from the United States on Jan 15.

A total of 305 people have now died from coronavirus.

"As of midnight on 31 January [16:00 GMT Friday], the National Health Commission received information about 11,791 confirmed cases of pneumonia caused by a new type of coronavirus from 31 provinces [regions and municipalities]". The Chinese government vowed to "severely" deal with those who hiked prices, or hoard and profiteer on such goods.

The bureau is also tracing people who could have come in contact with the couple in Cebu, Dumaguete and other places where they stayed and traveled to. Production of medical supplies are now at 60% after an early resumption of the manufacturing during the holiday, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said Sunday. The country has introduced mandatory quarantine for citizens arriving from Hubei.

China's efforts to contain the virus have taken some unexpected, and some might say unnerving, forms.

New York City wants to conduct its own tests on suspected virus patients, rather than wait for the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to complete the analysis.

Four friends who were hospitalised with him have not shown symptoms. If confirmed, it would be the first instance of the virus in the city.

"The risk of infection for Americans remains low and with these and our previous actions we are working to keep the risk low", Mr Azar said.

A man in the Philippines has become the first person outside China to die from the coronavirus outbreak, while the overall death toll has risen above 300 and the number of confirmed cases of infection increased to more than 14,000.

New confirmed cases also surged by 276 in nearby Huanggang.
