Flag flying on royal birthdays questioned after order to mark Andrew’s 60th

Flag flying on royal birthdays questioned after order to mark Andrew’s 60th”

Officials said they were re-considering how the policy applied "in changing circumstances, such as when members of the royal family step back from their duties", according to a spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

This means MPs would have to rush through new legislation over the next week, which seems unlikely.

A spokesperson for Westminster Abbey said: "Westminster Abbey is a Royal Peculiar and the bells are rung for the birthdays of HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh; their children; and TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children".

Andrew, who is eighth in line to the throne, qualifies for the flag-flying because he is a child of Queen Elizabeth II.

A spokeswoman for the abbey said there were "no plans to change these arrangements".

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is in charge of the flag flying policy.

Yet according to ITV, flying a flag on government building means a law would have to be changed which is a lengthy process and unlikely that MPs will rush to change legislation by February 19 when there are more important issues in the aftermath of Brexit.

Some mayors said their towns wouldn't be raising the Union Jack for Prince Andrew's birthday.

"In both countries we say that everyone is equal under the eyes of the law and it is time that we put those words into action by insisting on justice for the Epstein victims and justice for the Harry Dunn family", Bloom said.

He added: "When you look at his behaviour - it wouldn't be appropriate for us to mark his birthday".

The Duke stepped down from royal duties in November 2019 after he came under fire for showing a lack of empathy for Epstein's victims and failing to show regret over his friendship with the disgraced financier.

A spokesperson for the government confirms to PEOPLE that discussions are taking place.

Great Yarmouth District Council added: "We don't specifically fly the Union flag for birthdays as we have a government building".

All of the councils in Norfolk have been asked if they will be flying a flag for Prince Andrew's birthday.

Designated days for flying the British flag on United Kingdom government buildings include the birthdays of Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip, their wedding day, the birthdays of their four children and of their grandson Prince William and his wife Kate.
