Foxconn aims to resume half China production by end-February

Foxconn aims to resume half China production by end-February”

Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei had hoped that the rapid development of 5G in China this year would help the world's largest smartphone market rebound after years of decline in overall sales.

Customers wearing face masks shop inside a supermarket following an outbreak of the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, Hubei province, China February 10, 2020.

Planned product launches, such as 5G devices, in China are being canceled or delayed, since large public events are not allowed in China at the moment, the report notes.

Canalys also predicts that China's smartphone shipments will halve in the Q1 compared to a year ago. Oppo sold 6.8 million smartphones, down 20.4 percent year-on-year, and now has a smartphone market share of 17.1 percent in China.

Huawei, a company under fire from the United States, has been focusing its smartphone business on China, and it is expected that the outbreak will result in production slumping by 15pc to 42.5m units in Q1 2020. IDC highlights Huawei's Mate 30 Pro strong performance and vivo's successful iQOO brand as the main driving factors for Huawei's and vivo's market performance in 2019.

Moreover, if factories fail to restore and continue their production in its fullest capacity, it would further prevent brands from bringing forth their newer products to the market.

China smartphone market sees decline in 2019 the coronavirus to affect 2020

Oppo told Reuters that while the impact of the virus will affect operations in some local factories, "manufacturing capacity can be effectively guaranteed" thanks to its overseas plants.

Xiaomi did not respond to requests for comment.

"Delays in the reopening of factories and the return time of labor will not only affect shipments to stores, but will also affect product launch times in the medium and long term", said Will Wong, analyst of IDC.

The coronavirus outbreak impacted the Lunar New Year's shopping season in late January and is also expected to have adverse effects in the following months.

On Monday, research firm TrendForce revealed that smartphone production on a global scale will drop by 12 percent in the March quarter, which converts to a five-year love of 275 million units. Huawei is now predicted to produce just 42.5 million smartphone units in the first three months of 2020. In addition, Samsung Electronics, the world's largest smartphone maker, is considered the least affected company. As you know, its main production base in Vietnam. The company lowered its production forecast by only 3% to 71.5 million units.
