2nd Case of New Coronavirus Confirmed Among Evacuees in San Diego

"Obviously, a state wouldn't want to be doing this test and using it to make clinical decisions if it isn't working as well, as perfectly, at the state as it is at CDC", said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), said at a news conference.

Two cases have been confirmed in IL and one each in the states of Washington, Arizona, Wisconsin and MA.

The potential risk to the general public is low. No additional information was released.

Last week, the CDC had begun to ship about 200 testing kits to labs across the USA and 200 more to over 30 different countries so that more facilities could conduct testing for the new coronavirus. There are no confirmed cases in Maine.

Wicinski and his daughter had tested negative for coronavirus last week.

The virus can cause fever, coughing, wheezing and pneumonia. The Department of Defense says it is providing temporary lodging support for up to 1,000 passengers being evacuated from China to the U.S.in response to the coronavirus outbreak there. Test results are typically available within one to five days. Maine CDC has informed U.S. CDC in order to facilitate testing.

This is the first person under quarantine at JBSA-Lackland who had symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus, the agency said. Officials did not confirm where the individual is from.

The two patients "arrived on different planes and were housed in separate facilities; there are no epidemiologic links between them", a CDC statement said. "This test follows protocols established by the U.S. CDC".

So far, the CDC hasn't been invited to be part of an global joint mission to China, she said, though it stands ready to participate if asked. "Right now, the best thing ME people can do is to practice good hygiene, stay home if you feel sick, and share your recent travel history with medical providers if you experience fever, cough, or difficulty breathing".

Contracting the virus is unlikely unless someone has traveled recently to China or contacted someone with the virus.

The latest developments come after health officials said a coronavirus patient in San Diego was mistakenly released back into quarantine at MCAS Miramar. This assists with testing and preventing potential spread of illness to others.
