‘Aladdin’ Sequel in the Works

‘Aladdin’ Sequel in the Works”

Aladdin was released previous year after tons of hype, and let's just say it lived up to it all. After spending six months of looking for the proper story path, the studio has reportedly found the right angle based on a pitch from Flight's John Gatnis and Straight Outta Compton's Andrea Berloff, who have been tapped to pen the sequel. After meeting with Gatins and Berloff, they chose to move forward with their ideas and a script is in progress.

However, due to the live-action Aladdin film giving the three main characters whole new endings, it will be hard for the studio to adapt a sequel based on the two direct-to-home video sequels the animated Aladdin received. It pretty closely followed the story of the original Disney animated classic, released in 1992, but had a few modern twists, including new music and a villain people were strangely rooting for.

The sequel marks the second follow-up in development to the film, with a spin-off focused on Billy Magnussen's Prince Anders is in development for release on the booming new streaming service, Disney+, which initially drew ire from fans upset that the film surrounding POC characters wasn't set to get a follow-up while a film focused on the sole white character was planned.

The fact that the Aladdin sequel is definitely going to theaters isn't too surprising, after the massive success of the remake previous year. It netted over $502 million at the global box office. Producers hope to bring back stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott, but offers won't be extended to the cast until a script is ready. It's not now known if Guy Ritchie will return to resume directorial duties (although The Hollywood Reporter says Ritchie's on board for Part 2, which conflicts with Variety's and Deadline's reports).
