China records 'sudden' spike in new cases, new diagnostic methods fuel concerns

Zeng Guang, chief epidemiologist with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CCDC), made the remarks during an exclusive interview with the Global Times on Thursday morning, following Hubei Province's report of 14,840 new cases including 13,332 clinically diagnosed cases of COVID-19 as of midnight on Wednesday. China fired more than 100 officials, including the health minister and the mayor of Beijing, after allegations that local governments suppressed information about a similar outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS, in 2003.

USA equity futures followed most Asian stock markets lower on Thursday as investors digested the sudden changes at the epicenter of the outbreak.

The patient was among 232 people under quarantine at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar after being airlifted out of Wuhan earlier this month, CDC spokeswoman Ana Toro said.

The first installment of 1,400 military medical personnel touched down in the city in central China worst affected by the ongoing viral epidemic on Thursday, the Chinese Defense Ministry reported.

She said the numbers could all be revised retrospectively from December, and it now depended on whether the more severely ill patients were confirmed by lab diagnoses and therefore included in the original numbers.

Many countries have implemented travel restrictions on recent visitors to China, which has more than 99% of the world's reported infections.

In an unprecedented measure to contain the disease, recently named COVID-19, the Chinese government has placed the hardest-hit cities - home to more than 60 million - under lockdown.

It also said it had revised its old data and previous assessments of suspected cases.

China has handled the new coronavirus outbreak in a transparent and "highly responsible" way, the country's United Nations ambassador said Wednesday, after criticism that local authorities did not react quickly enough. "Ideally these should be reported too, or we do not get a complete picture", said McIntyre. The claim is false; the World Health Organization confirmed COVID-19 is an abbreviation of "coronavirus disease 2019" and said that geographical locations are not included when naming diseases to avoid stigmatisation.

"And we're also sending supplies of masks, gloves, gowns and other personal protective equipment to protect frontline health workers in 18 countries that need our support, and we have more in the pipeline".

It was "an example of the worldwide solidarity we have consistently been calling for", he said. Vietnam has confirmed 16 cases, majority in the province.

Another 44 people aboard a cruise ship that has been quarantined for over a week in Japan's Yokohama harbor tested positive for coronavirus Thursday, Japanese health officials said. The ship has 218 infections among its 3,700 passengers and crew.

"And I will spell it, C-O-V-I-D-hyphen-one-nine", WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a press conference on February 12, 2020. "In Singapore, we are at the beginning".
