February is American Heart Month!

February is American Heart Month!”

Heart disease kills an estimated 630,000 Americans each year.

Heart disease is estimated to account for almost one-third of all deaths worldwide. A healthy diet is one of the best weapons you have to fight cardiovascular disease.

Since 2004 February also has been the signature month for the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign. However, women tend to have more of the vague symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, indigestion, sweating and unusual fatigue.

To arrive at this assertion, researchers studied 790 men under 40 who had coronary artery disease and 1,270 healthy men of a similar age, who acted as a control group.

Blood pressure is multi-factorial. It can also cause a heart attack - in fact, about 70% of people having their first heart attack will have high blood pressure. This causes the heart to enlarge and weaken over time. And while lifestyle changes won't open an artery if it's already blocked by calcification, they can help prevent other blockages from happening. Cholesterol can damage and thicken the walls of the arteries, making it more hard for blood to reach the heart. "This is because fatty foods contain an unhealthy type of cholesterol". Risk factors for heart disease include high blood pressure, tobacco use, and high cholesterol.

Diabetes: At least 68 percent of people 65 or older with diabetes die from some form of heart disease, and 16 percent die of stroke, according to the AHA.

By following these tips, you will be doing your heart a favor.

Every 40 seconds, someone in our country will have a heart attack. Your doctor can help you quit. In addition, diuretics and beta-blockers may be prescribed to lower blood pressure and statins to lower cholesterol if lifestyle modifications aren't enough.

Control your cholesterol: Work with your doctor to get them to a healthy level. If you develop the levels that require interventions, it doesn't have to mean you have to be on medications.

Sitting for long periods of time can shorten your lifespan. Aim to include low fat dairy products, poultry, fish, legumes, heart healthy oils, and nuts. If you're inactive now, start out slow. It's really about prevention and being proactive about your medical care.
