February is American Heart Month!”

Heart disease kills an estimated 630,000 Americans each year.

Heart disease is estimated to account for almost one-third of all deaths worldwide. A healthy diet is one of the best weapons you have to fight cardiovascular disease.

Risk factors for heart disease include high blood pressure, tobacco use, and high cholesterol.

Diabetes: At least 68 percent of people 65 or older with diabetes die from some form of heart disease, and 16 percent die of stroke, according to the AHA.

By following these tips, you will be doing your heart a favor.

Every 40 seconds, someone in our country will have a heart attack. Your doctor can help you quit. In addition, diuretics and beta-blockers may be prescribed to lower blood pressure and statins to lower cholesterol if lifestyle modifications aren't enough.

Control your cholesterol: Work with your doctor to get them to a healthy level. If you develop the levels that require interventions, it doesn't have to mean you have to be on medications.

Sitting for long periods of time can shorten your lifespan. Aim to include low fat dairy products, poultry, fish, legumes, heart healthy oils, and nuts. If you're inactive now, start out slow. It's really about prevention and being proactive about your medical care.
