Mice fighting over crumbs in London Underground wins wildlife photo award

Mice fighting over crumbs in London Underground wins wildlife photo award”

Entitled "Station Squabble", a photo capturing two mice fighting over a food crumb in London's Underground was chosen from more than 48,000 images as the victor of the 2019 Wildlife Photographer of the Year LUMIX People's Choice award.

The split-second shot captured the rodents in silhouette, undertaking epic combat on a station platform.

Speaking of the moment the picture was taken, Rowley said the two mice were foraging separately until they both came along a piece of food they wanted.

Sam said: "I'm so pleased to win this award".

Wildlife Photographer of the Year is developed and produced by the Natural History Museum, London.

The overall competition was won previous year by Yongqing Bao, who snapped the startled, tragicomic final moments of a marmot cornered by a fox in China's Qilian Mountains.

"The mice's behavior is sculpted by our daily routine, the transport we use and the food we discard", Dixon added in a press release.

British photographer Aaron Gekoski's portrait of an orangutan wearing boxing gloves in a garish circus-like setting is a case in point.

"Every day, hundreds of people watch them box, dance, play the drums and perform other pointless tricks", Gekoski wrote on Instagram after he was shortlisted for the prize in December.

Spot the reindeer by Francis De Andres, Spain - The conditions for photographing at the Norwegian archipelago Svalbard are extreme, but wildlife has adapted to the environment and its freezing temperatures.

The surrogate mother by Martin Buzora, Canada - Elias Mugambi is a ranger at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in northern Kenya. He often spends weeks away from his family caring for orphaned black rhinos like Kitui here.

The infant rhinos are cared for at the sanctuary either because of poachers or because their mothers are blind and can not look after them in the wild.

Other highly commended images include Matching Outfits, by Michel Zoghzoghi, showing a jaguar mother and her cub dragging a similarly patterned anaconda across the photographer's path in the Pantanal in Brazil.

Spot The Reindeer, by Francis De Andres, shows white Arctic reindeer nearly hidden against a snowy background in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard. The simultaneously recognizable and unknown world Sam has captured draws the viewer into the image.

If you're wondering how Sam managed to capture such a great shot, well that's simple - he just said "cheese".
