Singapore’s DBS Sends 300 Staff Home After One Contracts Coronavirus”

Singapore's DBS Bank evacuated 300 employees from its head office on Wednesday after a worker was confirmed to have coronavirus, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters.

Singapore has reported 47 cases of coronavirus, one of the highest number of cases outside China where it has already claimed over 1,100 lives. DBS said an employee was tested on February 11 and the bank was informed of the confirmation of coronavirus on Wednesday morning.

The DBS said it was conducting contact tracing with all employees and other people the infected person may have come into contact with.

300 staff members from the bank's offices at the Marina Bay Financial Centre were evacuated once the case was confirmed.

"During this hard time, the bank will be providing this employee and his family with every support and guidance", DBS said, according to the BBC.

Employees at the bank told Reuters that other floors were unaffected.

As a effect, all companies and many public spaces have started scanning employees and visitors for temperature.

Visitors pass through a thermal scanner as they arrive the Singapore Air Show on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020, in Singapore. The government has cautioned people against shaking hands as a form of greeting.

Staff are also being given a 'personal hygiene and protection Care Pack, ' including masks, a thermometer, hand sanitiser and vitamin C. The bank is aso rolling out webinars for medical health professionals to update employees on the latest developments on COVID-19 and to answer their medical concerns.

"We have also activated business continuity plans, with employees working from home or from split sites, to ensure minimal disruption to operation", the announcement added.

The outbreak has revived memories of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) which killed more than 30 people in Singapore in 2003, and almost 800 worldwide.
