Some coronavirus testing kits are defective, CDC says

Some coronavirus testing kits are defective, CDC says”

A second case of novel coronavirus has been confirmed in the U.S. among evacuees from China, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Wednesday.

This is the first person under quarantine at JBSA-Lackland who had symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus, the agency said.

A NY pharmaceutical company says it could have an experimental treatment for COVID-19 in three to six months. The petition from those in quarantine was written "in light of the first confirmed case at Miramar coupled with the current precautions taken at the center", and the listed improvements were "critical measures toward mitigating the potential risk of spreading the virus at the Miramar Center".

The patient was among a group that had returned on a charter flight from China on February 7.

But, the same day, the CDC confirmed that there was a thirteenth coronavirus patient in the U.S., a woman who had also been evacuated from Wuhan, on one of the last two flights. The person, who was not identified, is now isolated at home. Of those 15 cases, two people had not recently visited China but contracted the virus from a spouse who did.

Wilson described what it was like under quarantine at the air base, saying the CDC recommended the residents stand six feet away from each other, but they are placed shoulder-to-shoulder for daily temperature checks, which he said "flies in the face of the protections and precautions". "The problem was because of differences between San Diego labeling and what the CDC lab accepts, the sample from the woman didn't even reach testing stage so it was true that all samples that were tested were negative, and it was also true that the woman had COVID-19 [coronavirus] because her sample was not tested".

The patients did not infect one another, and fewer people who have been in China are now coming back to the US. An American did die from the virus in Wuhan. It hasn't said how numerous kits are flawed, however.

"At this time there is no indication of person-to-person spread of this virus at the quarantine facility, but CDC will carry out a thorough contact investigation as part of its current response strategy to detect and contain any cases of infection with this virus", Dr Christopher Braden, deputy director of the CDC's National Centre for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, said in a statement.

Japan confirmed its first coronavirus death, adding to two previous fatalities in Hong Kong and the Philippines.

"Our goal is to be as least restrictive as possible" while protecting the health of all Americans, Messonnier said.
