Tiger Roll rated 50-50 to defend Grand National crown

Tiger Roll rated 50-50 to defend Grand National crown”

Whether he shows up at Aintree for the Grand National is another story altogether, however.

Tiger Roll, who's educated by Gordon Elliott and owned by Gigginstown House Stud, is aiming to emulate the legendary Red Rum as a three-time victor of the Randox Health Grand National and, if victorious, would develop into the primary horse to take action in consecutive years.

Tiger Roll's Randox Health Grand National weight has been compressed by a solitary pound forward of his bid for a historic third successive win in the race.

Tiger Roll and Davy Russell clear the last at Aintree.

"I'm not sure. One thing for certain is that he'll be entered in the Betfair Bowl (a Grade One over 3m1f) as well". They include Bristol de Mai (11st 8lb), one of the seven contenders for the double victor of the Grand National Nigel Twiston-Davies, the hero of the Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup 2018 Native River (Colin Tizzard, 11st 6lb) and Anibale Fly JP McManus (Tony Martin IRE, 11st 2lb), fourth in 2018 and fifth in 2019.

"Tiger Roll is a brilliant, brilliant horse and he is completely invaluable to us, but we have to do our best by the horse".

"It must be remembered that Tiger Roll ran in the race off a rating of 159 but was actually rated 167 at the time due to his win in the Cross Country at Cheltenham".

Last year's runner-up Magic Of Light (Jessica Harrington IRE) has been handed 10st 12lb. He is trained at High Eldwick by Sue and Harvey Smith, who saddled Auroras Encore to National glory in 2013, and could reappear in Haydock's Grand National Trial this weekend. He's on 10st 10lb. A high-profile instance could be Cadmium, a Topham Chase victor. He needs seven higher-rated horses to be withdrawn to make the 40-runner cut.

"It's fascinating to have Jessica Harrington's Magic Of Light also entered in the race resulting in Navan having the privilege of the first and second across the line in the Grand National previous year competing at what promises to be a great race". He had just 11st 8lb when winning for a record third time in 1977.

Sunday's outing will be a first look at Tiger Roll since having a chip removed from a joint in November, but Elliott has no qualms about him running, "Yeah he's in good form, he's back cantering since the 1st of January".

However BHA handicapper Martin Greenwood said Tiger Roll's winning mark past year did not take account of the horse's win in Cheltenham's Cross Country's race which came after the publication of the National weights.

"Tiger Roll was rated 172 at the end of a year ago and obviously there is no recent evidence to continue due to its fitness problems, so its disability mark has not been quantifiable since then. Whilst he may run in the Boyne Hurdle at Navan on Sunday he still has to run in a chase to qualify", stated British Horseracing Authority chase handicapper Martin Greenwood today at the announcement of the weights.

Elliott has 18 entries in total, more than any other coach, as he pursues a record equivalent to the fourth Grand National, and his team also features the promising rookie Champagne Classic (10st 6lb) and the victor of the 2019 Galway Plate Borice (10st ).
