DHHR Confirms: W.Va. Child Died Of The Flu”

According to the CDC, about 8% of the US population becomes ill from flu each season.

State officials won't say much about the latest pediatric flu death, except that the child is under 18 and the death was in southern Wisconsin.

A new coronavirus continues to grab headlines across the globe but closer to home health officials say residents should be more anxious about an old and annual nemesis: Influenza.

He adds that the state probably won't be at peak activity for the flu for a couple more weeks, and then there will be many weeks of high activity.

The coronavirus outbreak that erupted in China and is spreading to the rest of the world is dominating headlines and capturing the attention of people worldwide, and for good reason.

Seasonal flu, though, is a far more active disease in the U.S.

According to the most recent numbers released by the San Joaquin County Department of Public Health, 10 people have died of the flu this season - which officially began during the 40th week of previous year - compared to only 8 through the same time period, which was measured through February 5.

The influenza virus typically infects the nose, throat and sometimes the lungs. "Keeping yourself healthy in general is a top priority for all of us and instead of overreacting to the coronavirus we should just be conscious of stay- ing healthy in general".

"Although the corona- virus has killed a lot of people in a short period of time, I think it's super important to keep in mind how many people that the flu kills every year", said Bibber.

"Neither type of flu vaccine causes infection", Barnwell said.

"In some populations, it can be quite serious, especially in younger children, people over 65 and pregnant women or anyone with a compromised immune system", said Gerrard.

It was also estimated that only 37.1% of people got their flu shot past year.

"That is the No. 1 prevention tip", said Gerrard.

He also says that the case fatality rate of coronavirus is about 2%, compared to that of influenza, which he says is typically lower than 0.1%. "The truth is in the future that certainly can change, but right now the biggest threat for us is still influenza virus", he said.
