NASA looking to hire more astronauts for next moon mission

NASA looking to hire more astronauts for next moon mission”

The white House charged NASA with ferrying astronauts on the lunar surface by the year 2024, however the space agency targets getting ready with the assistance from the private sector.

So starting on March 2, the agency will be accepting applications for its next class of astronauts.

They are required to have a master's degree in the science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) field. NASA is planning to select the next batch by mid-2021 after which the selected candidates will undergo proper training at the Johnson Space Center located in Houston, Texas.

It was only in January 2020 when the first class of astronauts under the Artemis program graduated but NASA is already looking for more.

"For the bunch of profoundly gifted ladies and men, we will contract to join our different space traveler corps, and it's a fantastic time in human spaceflight to be a space explorer".

"We're celebrating our 20th year of continuous presence aboard the International Space Station in low-Earth orbit this year, and we're on the verge of sending the first woman and next man to the Moon by 2024", said NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine in a press statement.

According to NASA, the astronauts who will complete the training could eventually live and work aboard the ISS to take part in experiments that will help prepare NASA for further explorations.

Wanted: The next generation of astronauts to walk on the Moon and journey to Mars. NASA has announced its graduate degree in engineering, physics, computer science, biology and mathematics as a prerequisite.

Additionally, candidates need a minimum of two years' professional experience, or, in the case of pilots, 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time.

Candidates will have to take a two-hour online test to make it through the competition.

After getting a record number of uses during its last recruitment - more than 18,000 individuals applied for the 2017 class - NASA has expanded its qualification prerequisites and added another progression to the application procedure. Or they could launch on new spacecraft and dock at Gateway, the new spaceship that NASA is planning that will orbit the moon.

After completing training, the new astronauts could launch on United States rockets and spacecraft developed for NASA's Commercial Crew Program to live and work aboard the International Space Station, 250 miles above Earth, where they will take part in experiments that benefit life at home and prepare us for more distant exploration.

NASA plans on returning humans to the moon by 2024, after which plans are being made to establish sustainable lunar exploration by 2028.
