Yorkshire's Rishi Sunak confirmed as next Chancellor after Sajid Javid resigns”

Speaking on the BBC's Newscast, the former adviser to Sajid Javid claimed behind his sudden resignation lies pressure from a team of people in Number 10 who have gone "a little bit crazy". "Sad not to be part of it".

Smith, who had been in charge of parliamentary discipline for Johnson's predecessor, Theresa May, was the first minister to lose his job in the reshuffle.

In Suffolk Thérèse Coffey (Suffolk Coastal) held on to her brief at the Department for Work and Pensions and Matt Hancock stays as health secretary.

Smith had been widely praised for helping to end political deadlock that left Northern Ireland without a regional government and assembly for three years. Witham MP Priti Patel also remains as home secretary.

But the major shock of the day was the refusal of now former chancellor Sajid Javid to fall in line with demands from Number 10 to sack his backroom staff.

According to reports, the move marked the climax in a power-struggle between Javid and Boris Johnson's chief advisor Dominic Cummings, with the Chancellor reportedly nicknamed "CHINO" - "Chancellor in name only" by Cummings and his allies. His successor Rishi Sunak was born in Southampton to Hindu parents who moved to the United Kingdom from India in the 1960s.

"He is going to be a fantastic Chancellor".

Mr Javid said that "no self-respecting minister" could accept the conditions being imposed.

Speaking later, Javid said Johnson had asked him to fire all his aides and replace them with staff approved by the prime minister's office.

And he told Mr Johnson in his resignation letter that he believed it was "important as leaders to have trusted teams that reflect the character and integrity that you would wish to be associated with".

Out of 26 ministers attending the meeting of the PM's top team, just seven are women - down from eight - and there are fewer women in the most senior roles.

Along with the ministerial exits, the reshuffle - which Downing Street insiders had predicted would be "conventional" before the row with Javid - included promotions for MPs who are highly rated by Number 10.

Ultra-loyal Alok Sharma, a former minister for worldwide development, was appointed as the new minister for business and also the head of the COP26 climate change summit, when world leaders will travel to Scotland in November. Others were promoted, including Suella Braverman to the position of attorney general and Anne-Marie Trevelyan to the post of global development secretary.
