The Alabama defense was one of the worst ever under Saban last season, being the main reason the Crimson Tide lost two games to LSU and Auburn. Additionally, Low reported that Strong received interest from several SEC programs looking to add him in a coordinator and/or analyst position. Strong had spent the past three seasons as the head coach at South Florida but was sacked at the end of the 2019 season. Sarkisian is now the Tide's offensive coordinator. Strong was then hired by South Florida where he went 10-2 in his first season before things started to fall apart. He was sacked in December after a disappointing 4-8 campaign. Before that, he was at Texas for three years before being fired with a 16-21 mark.

Along with his head coaching experience, strong also served as a defensive coordinator at Florida (2003-09) where he also coached defensive ends and linebackers.
