Donald Trump 'offered Julian Assange pardon'

Donald Trump 'offered Julian Assange pardon'”

Former GOP congressman Dana Rohrabacher is denying a bombshell claim from an attorney for Julian Assange - who alleged that Rohrabacher visited the Wikileaks founder and saying that he was under instructions from President Donald Trump to offer a presidential pardon in exchange for Assange publicly stating Russian Federation did not have anything to do with the DNC hack.

At a preliminary hearing Wednesday, Assange's lawyer Edward Fitzgerald asked the court to allow more witness statements during the extradition hearing that will start next week.

Mr Rohrabacher visited the Ecuadorian embassy in August 2017, where Mr Assange was staying, he said.

In a pre-trial hearing, however, his attorney Edward Fitzgerald told the magistrate that there had been an offer made by former Congressman Dana Rohrabacher that Assange would be pardoned if he would provide evidence, or claim that Russian Federation was not behind the Wikileaks publication of DNC emails in 2016.

A series of embarrassing emails leaked from the Democratic National Congress (DNC) and the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign were hacked before being published by WikiLeaks in 2016.

District Judge Vanessa Baraitser said the evidence was admissable.

Responding to the the lawyer's claims, White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said, "This is absolutely and completely false". (Shocking!) "The President barely knows Dana Rohrabacher other than he's an ex-congressman".

But a Trump administration official told the Journal Trump himself wasn't aware of the details of Rohrabacher's proposed deal, and Rohrabacher later said then-White House Chief of Staff John Kelly wouldn't let him speak to Trump about it. This is probably another never ending hoax and total lie from the DNC.

Australian national Assange, 48, is facing 18 counts in the USA - 17 of them under the Espionage Act. In May, the U.S. government revealed the expanded indictment, threatening him with 175 years behind bars for "attempted hacking" - but in relation to the 2010 Pentagon disclosures, not the 2016 election.

He is accused of working with former U.S. army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to leak hundreds of thousands of classified documents.

His extradition hearing is due to begin at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday, beginning with a week of legal argument. It will resume in May, and a ruling is not expected for several months.

Assange has been held on remand in Belmarsh prison since last September after serving a 50-week jail sentence for breaching his bail conditions while he was in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

In 2012, Assange took refuge at the embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he was wanted for questioning over sexual assault allegations.

At Wednesday's hearing, Assange spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth.

The hearing came after Australian MPs George Christensen and Andrew Wilkie called on Tuesday for Boris Johnson to intervene and stop the extradition hearing.
