Putin dismisses rumours he uses body doubles for security”

But during an interview with TASS news agency aired on Thursday, Putin was shown a list of popular Internet searches purportedly associated with his name, one of which was entitled "Putin body double evidence". After the president read out, "Putin lookalike proof", Vandenko said he liked that question and asked him, "Are you the real Putin?"

He said that he feels "more comfortable" relying on protected communications means and may occasionally use an aide's phone.

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks during a meeting with members of a working group created to discuss constitutional amendments in Moscow, Russia, Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020. Another leading theory suggests Putin could revamp an obscure governmental body, the State Council, which Putin has said should now have a new role.

Medvedev said at the time: 'We are not doubles, we are real'.

Russian Federation has announced the date of a national referendum on constitutional changes that could allow Vladimir Putin, now 67, to extend his time in office.

"The double would go where things were dodgy?" asked Vandenko.

Body doubles were reportedly used by former Kremlin leaders such as Josef Stalin and Leonid Brezhnev.

In 2015, Putin disappeared from public view for 10 days which prompted speculation about health issues or even that he had been ousted from power by the army, Reuters reported.

Putin as prime minister and then president oversaw the second war against separatists in Chechnya from 1999 to 2000.

The end of Putin's second consecutive term allowed under the Russian constitution ends in 2024 and in January, he proposed constitutional changes widely seen as a way for him to try to hang on to power after that.

Russian lawmakers are sorting through which of almost 1,000 proposed amendments should appear on the upcoming referendum, now set for April 22.
