Two new COVID-19 deaths reported in Toronto, York Region”

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit has reported two other cases of novel coronavirus.

All of the other new cases are pending. Hospitals and long-term-care facilities have started restricting visitor access and health officials are preparing for when we do see the first case show up locally.

Due to those two cases, there are 80 staff at RVH who have had to go through a screening process due to potential exposure.

"Unfortunately, this man's tragic passing highlights that we now have community transmission of COVID-19 in our area", said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Lynn Noseworthy. The Bradford woman in her 30s was hospitalized in serious condition at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket on March 17. However, he said it's unknown at this time when she became infected.

As of this morning, there have been 26,419 people in the province approved for testing, which is an increase of 3,000 from yesterday's provincial report.

Toronto Public Health says a man in his 70s who had travelled to England died on Saturday.

The woman is posthumously considered Ontario's 425th case of the virus.

Health officials in York Region, meanwhile, recorded their first coronavirus-related death - a Markham woman in her 70s who had returned Saturday from an global trip. So far, there are nine cases reported in the region, two are hospitalized, two have died, and the rest are at home recovering in self-isolation.

On Friday, the region confirmed a coronavirus outbreak at the Pinecrest Nursing Home in Bobcaygeon after three long-term care residents tested positive for the virus.

BC still has the most cases confirmed of any province or territory in Canada with 424 cases reported as of yesterday, 10 deaths in the province and six recoveries.

Meanwhile, the federal government's 30-million-dollar multi-media ad campaign to advise Canadians about how to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 begins today.
