Uefa formally postpones Champions League, Europa League final

Uefa formally postpones Champions League, Europa League final”

This season's Champions League, Europa League and women's Champions League finals scheduled for May have been formally postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic, European soccer's governing body UEFA said on Tuesday.

UEFA have also confirmed that the Women's UEFA Champions League final, which was also due to take place in May, has been postponed too.

"The working group will analyse the options available", read a UEFA statement.

"The group has already begun its examination of the calendar. Announcements will be made in due course".

Istanbul was set to host the men's Champions League showpiece on May 30, while the Europa League final was due to take place on May 27 in Gdansk.

The dates of June 24 and 27 for the Europa League and Champions League finals to be rearranged to were discussed during the meeting.

Europe's key football showcases, planned for May, have been postponed because of the COVID-19 crisis, UEFA says.

It comes with domestic and worldwide football on hold across the continent as countries battle to contain the spread of the virus.

La Liga and Ligue 1 are suspended indefinitely, while the Premier league, Women's Super League, Serie A and Bundesliga have all tentatively suggested they could return in April, though that seems nearly certain to be pushed back further given the pandemic still appears to be accelerating.

Manchester City and Real Madrid are yet to play their Champions League round of 16 second leg after the English side's 2-1 victory in Spain in February.

Arsenal and Glasgow City both remain at the last-eight stage of the Women's Champions League.

Manchester United, Wolves and Rangers are all facing second-leg ties in the last 16 of Europe's second biggest men's club competition.
