African jazz great Manu Dibango dies in France of virus”

Renowned Afro-jazz star Manu Dibango has died after contracting the new coronavirus, his representatives and official Facebook page have announced.

He developed a musical style fusing jazz, funk and traditional Cameroonian music.

The Cameroon-born saxophonist, who gained global fame with his 1972 song "Soul Makossa", died in a hospital in the Paris region, Thierry Durepaire said.

A message on his official Facebook page confirmed that his death had come after he contracted COVID-19.

His funeral will take place in "strict privacy", the statement read, asking instead for people to send condolences by email and adding that a tribute will be arranged "when possible".

Manu Dibango is most famous for writing the 1972 single "Soul Makossa", which was a secondary song in a CD dedicated to the Cameroon national football team on the occasion of the African Cup of Nations.

Apart from his hit work, Dibango got into buzz after accusing Michael Jackson of borrowing one of his hooks for two songs on the album named Thriller. Jackson settled the case out of court.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of Manu Dibango, our Papy Groove, who died from Covid-19 on March 24, 2020, aged 86".
