Nvidia DLSS 2.0 released, coming to Control and Mechwarrior 5”

DLSS 2.0 is now implemented in Control, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, Deliver Us The Moon and Wolfenstein: Youngblood, with more titles likely coming soon.

"DLSS 2.0 offers image quality comparable to native resolution while only having to render one quarter to one half of the pixels", wrote NVIDIA. We saw that in practice when Battlefield V and Metro: Exodus's initially ho-hum DLSS 1.0 implementations improved by great lengths after release.

In addition, with DLSS running, the user is able to run their games at high resolutions without loss of performance. Also, Windows 10 users must choose from two packages: DCH or Standard file (as shown in NVIDIA Control Panel System Information Driver Type). Nvidia put a ton of effort into making a new version of DLSS that ran on the traditional shader cores of a GPU, making a DLSS model that was more adaptable and could be used on non-RTX cards.

While this naturally doesn't mean that every game will offer support for DLSS 2.0, it does remove a substantial pain point of the original implementation that explains why numerous titles that claimed DLSS support was coming never delivered on that promise. How often do you use DLSS in its current form?

One Network for All Games -The original DLSS required training the AI network for each new game.

Nvidia's DLSS stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling (our analysis here), and is a technique that was introduced together with the RTX 2000-series graphics cards in September 2018. With Turing's Tensor Cores delivering up to 110 teraflops of dedicated AI horsepower, the DLSS network can be run in real-time simultaneously with an intensive 3D game.

Nvidia packages up the model when training is complete and delivers it to consumers' PCs via DLSS 2.0.

Remedy Entertainment's Control was one of 2019's best single-player games, and also one of its most advanced, with a suite of ray-traced effects that took its graphical fidelity to new heights. Performance mode uses a 4X image upscale to spit out frames even faster, while Quality mode dials that back to a 2X upscale for optimal visuals.

Not only does the DLSS 2.0 update promise better speeds, but the quality of the DLSS render itself is also said to have gotten an overhaul, thanks to an improved architecture that's been integrated into the neural net algorithm, and it will be better equipped to handle situations that used to trip up DLSS 1.0. However, the improved integration method and support for Unreal Engine 4 means that we should see more developers adopting DLSS 2.0 as the year goes on.

As stated previously, Wolfenstein: Youngbloods and Deliver Us to the Moon already support DLSS 2.0. But Jesse's not the only one to benefit, because Mechwarrior 5 of all games is getting the new DLSS too. From the sounds of it, DLSS 2.0 is going to be a big upgrade all around, so I'll be looking forward to checking out the improvements in Control and Wolfenstein later in the week.
