Trump defends Asian Americans amid concerns over virus-linked racism”

Taro Aso, the gaffe-prone Japanese deputy prime minister, called the virus "Wuhan virus" at a press conference, referring to the central Chinese city where the illness was first reported late past year. He also dismissed criticism that his labelling it the "Chinese virus" was racist.

US President Donald Trump says people of Asian origin should not be blamed for the spread of the coronavirus.

Trump denied that the term creates stigma and told reporters at the time that the virus came from China and that he wanted to be accurate.

"And do you think, using the term "Chinese virus", that puts Asian-Americans at risk, that people might target them?" He added that China's claim that the U.S. military gave the virus to them creates stigma.

Over the past few days there's been a noticeable uptick in conservatives using the terms "Wuhan virus" and "Chinese virus", according to a new report from The Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab provided exclusively to Axios.

The Times called it a "sudden spasm of hate that is reminiscent of the kind faced by American Muslims and other Arabs and South Asians after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001". In a separate incident in California, an Asian teen was sent to the emergency room after he was bullied and assaulted because of coronavirus fears.

Trump has referred to COVID-19 as the "Chinese Virus," something health officials have warned could fuel discrimination against Asian Americans. Some accused Trump of not owning up to his words. Trump said, "Our relationship with China is very good relationship".

"I encourage the president to listen to his own tweet and shift away from xenophobia and stop calling it the 'Chinese virus, '" she said.
