Goodell tells National Football League teams to close facilities until at least April 8

Goodell tells National Football League teams to close facilities until at least April 8”

With the coronavirus pandemic taking a major toll on professional sports in the United States, the 2020 NFL Draft original scheduled to take place in Las Vegas has been put in doubt. Those plans, however, could be jeopardized by the teams' reluctance to proceed as scheduled.

"General managers are concerned that, in this current environment, with offseason activities and some teams' facilities closed, there won't be enough time for player physicals, gathering psychological testing, getting further verified information about the players and some teams having to conduct the draft from home".

The NFL's general manager subcommittee on Tuesday recommended to commissioner Roger Goodell that the league push back the draft, according to ESPN.

Instead, the league is reportedly planning to move the draft out of Vegas and into a studio, with cut-ins from team headquarters or wherever else executives will be operating. The draft is still expected to be televised.

The NFL instructed teams to close all facilities by 6 p.m. on Wednesday with limited exceptions until April 8, according to Tom Pelissero.

"The challenges we face are not unique - many businesses and individuals throughout the country are experiencing and addressing similar issues", Goodell said.

Though facilities are closed, teams are still free to conduct the signing of players, evaluation of draft prospects, selling tickets and other operations in regards to preparation for the 2020 season.

"Over the past week, every National Football League club has suspended normal business operations in response to the advice of medical experts and public health authorities", Goodell's statement began.

As of Wednesday morning, more than 55,000 cases have been reported in the USA, with 801 deaths and 354 people recovered, according to Johns Hopkins University, which has been tracking the outbreak using combined data sources.
