Japanese PM: IOC agrees '100 percent' to postpone Olympics for 1 year”

Hashimoto said the global pandemic of coronavirus infections should end before Japan can proceed with hosting the Tokyo Olympic Games, after the meeting.

Japanese Prime Minister Abe says International Olympic Committee president has agreed "100%" to proposal of postponing Olympics for about 1 year. He 100 per cent agrees with me.

"It was the best decision for the athletes, for all the players in the Games", added Estanguet. The IOC announced this with a statement after the news anticipated by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

"President Trump repeatedly said the postponement was a very wise and great decision and he expressed support for the Prime Minister's stance", chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga, a leading spokesperson for the Japanese Government, said at a press conference, as reported by Kyodo News. "I'm excited to get back to racing, looking forward to Tokyo 2021, and wishing everyone a safe 2020"'.

"The UCI is multiplying its contacts with cycling's families [the International Association of Cycling Race Organisers (AIOCC), the International Association of Professional Cycling Teams (AIGCP) and the Professional Cyclists' Association (CPA)] and, as athletes are the focus of our concerns, with our sport's riders' representatives", the statement continued.

"We are really advancing on our own preparation plan".

They were joined by Mori Yoshiro, President of the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee; the Olympic minister, Hashimoto Seiko; Tokyo governor Koike Yuriko; the chairman of the IOC coordination commission, John Coates; the IOC Director General, Christophe De Kepper and the IOC Olympic Games Executive Director, Christophe Dubi.

"This is not an easy situation, especially for the athletes who had been training hard for Tokyo 2020".

On Monday, Pound had told USA Today that, "On the basis of the information the International Olympic Committee has, postponement has been decided". Reports suggest the country has spent more than $12 billion on the Games, while huge sums are also at stake for sponsors and broadcasters.

The Olympic flame will stay in Japan "as a beacon of hope to the world during these troubled times".
